Am not sure if this is the right way,
but I managed to avoid T-Mobile branding by
only updating the firmware part and not the customization part.
I copied everything from the FW27 folder to FW40 folder, without
overwriting anything. Then I edited 3GSWUPFU_INFO.txt
by replacing "Customization : EF81_de-TMO-G_39_0083"
with: "Customization : EF81_de-BRDHandel-std_27_0060"
It seemed to work fine, and my phone now reports SVN 39.
Got the thumbnails in mediaplayer and all.
Could someone test this tell me if they find any drawbacks?
I haventh tried the branded version of 39, so I am not sure if
all the fixes of it applied.

Hello and thank you for sharing your experiences. :-D
Please can you specify more what and how you did it. Did you use the Firmware Update Software for FW39, which is about 45 MB large? Then it would be a full update of everything. I didn't have a choice between firmware or customization part in the update confirmation menu.
Did you install the update software on Windows XP and then examined/manipulated the firmware and customization folder in the program folder? If so, please mention the paths and write here a small howto! :-D

yes worked for me too. Thanks very much for sharing, has done everything I wanted. Without the T Mobile Branding.
Its pretty straight forward to do. Just download both 27 and 39. (both around 45-49mb)
extract them both and you should have 2 setup files.
run each setup file in turn (there is a prompt which will ask where you want to extract the files) make sure you choose a different destination for each firmware e.g.
c:\svn27
c:\svn39
Then simply copy the files from the folder to svn27 to svn39, and choose no to overwrite for each file.
You should then end up with about 4 extra files in the svn39 folder
Then edit 3GSWUPFU_INFO.txt
and replace the line "Customization : EF81_de-TMO-G_39_0083"
with: "Customization : EF81_de-BRDHandel-std_27_0060"
File and save.
then run 3GSwupFU2.exe to update.
Please Note: this will erase everything on your phone. contacts, pictures, messages. everything so you will need to backup anything you want to keep.

Yes, stazzex got the procedure right.
Only thing I noticed with the combined firmware, that I cant
go into 'Call setup'-menu in the settings. Is it working allright for others?
Or has anyone noticed anything else not working with the combined firmware?

Well, I caution this procedure because you basically will have FW 27, and will have some of the old bugs that are cleared with FW39.
I think the branding affects only the menu structure, so I still think the best workaround is to copy only the menu structure of an original FW version to a branded FW version.
Supposedly, these two folder are changed in a branded version, so you will have to overwrite the files of the branded version (eg FW39) with the original ones (eg FW27), as you already have read in the howto by RhymeKamikaze.

That depends on the file included in the customization package
compared to the "main file".
My phone works well with the combined firmware and
at least most of the new features/fixes are there (for example thumbnails).
And to top that my GPRS doesnt work with the pure branded 39 version,
so the branding must affect more things then just the menu.
Therefore I'll rather stick with this. :)

No, I can tell you I do not have trouble with GPRS. I just have another provider than t-online, I'm with Orange Switzerland. I got the necessary browser setting, mms, email setting etc. via the "mobile setting" of benq-siemens.com, product page EF81, Support tab, and "mobile setting".

I have another provider too, and its not because of the settings,
they are correct and work on 27 and on 27+39.
The phone wont regognice the support for GPRS with the pure 39 firmware.
Hence, its not a problem with the profiles or such.
And yes, I have checked the setting in the network menu.

Well I didn't experience this problem. And I believe I can speak for other FW39 users here in the forum.
Maybe you mean with GPRS the ability to use the openwave browser? The icon for the browser has been replaced by a "web'n'walk" icon so you cannot access the browser normally. And also other menu icons were disabled but displayed, e.g. the "themes" icon. By replacing the whole menu structure by an unbranded firmware helped to solve this problem for me.

No, Its not that, I know how to use my phone(s).
The branded 39 seems to think for some reason that the
network doesnt support GPRS and wont show it and wont
let me connect.

Hi!
I really want to try this out, and I have done the following:
Downloaded both firmwares (39 and 27).
Copied all files from the SV27 folder to the SV38 folder (selecting no to every file it asks to overwrite).
Is this OK now, could I just run the update process? Is there are more complete tutorial on how to connect and run the actual update program as well?
- One question though... Does this firmware contain Norwegian language?? It's really no use to me if it doesn't, as I'm from Norway, and need that in SMS etc...
Cheers!

This will render your firmware more buggy than previous versions.
Im guessing i've spoken to you over email or private messages on a different forum.
These firmware versions do NOT contain the norwegian menu or t9 options.

Version 40 is available and downloadable,

Could you help a newbie and tell me where can I download SVN40 (PM, e-mail)? I am getting sick and tired of my SVN23 and all the bugs :(

I am a newbie as well (just joined today) and need to find out where to download SVN40. If I can get the link (via email/pm), then I'll take it from there. thanks
