M65 upgrade to new firmware with different variant?

what's the difference between each variant? is it only that there are different languages or there's something more? i see that english is common to all, so if i'm ok with english, i can use any variant... or not?

too bad the fw16 for a700 (my phone's variant) is not yet available...

is it safe to upgrade to a firmware with a different variant? has anyone tried it?

imo the difference is in languages i.e. i bought M65 in july'04 was on travel cruise trip in St.Petersburg (Russia) i found it was quite good price there, (promo maybe?), smth about ~280USD, it was FW02 and variant A390 and kinda Russian retail (shown in Status).
It have double alphabet on keys/buttons - I mean lattin and cyrillic letters/caracters, but this do not make any sense for me..
i am not Russian myself, and i use it on English language anyway..

Ok then i changed firmware and up to fw12 i used/loaded the same variant when it was available @siemens homesite, but as there is no FW16 yet, so i loaded service update [- m65_160400.xbz_service.exe/ and it replaced the languages to (east ?) european group - most like Slovenia , Srpski Polski, etc, but also still have English, Deutch, Nederlands, but not Russian ...
my previous, original variant A390 had more Baltic group languages + russian, most like: English, Polski, Russian, Latvian, Lithunian, Estonian, Ukrainian, but i dont care ... used it on English settings ..

only one thing i notice ! after i loaded FW16 (160400) i presume it means variant A4 ( 400) but Status monitor *#06# show me still FW16 variant A390 ...

in general, my phone works like a charm :).. no carashing, occasional self shutoffs .. like many ppl . complain, .. also i have not much "hacked" it either, only few is done like deleted camera shooter sound, loaded some 3D Games for test purpose.. so far, if You don't care about other than English language it is worth to go with sevice update to fw16 .. and, BTW, You can downgrade fw, but You need also correct Service (not update exe) to do this

PS ! I do not know does the service run succesfully on other cables !!
I have only DCA -500 Serial .. and never tested others, - usb or etc non siemens certified cables .. just for info ! take care !!!

btw, the link indicates a service file, not an update file (like the ones in the siemens site). this confuses me, as i thought service files are for downgrading... :shock:

Yep, there is not update for m65 fw16 .. just the service..

just for info !!!!!! * i have sayd it also in earlier posts but ..
keep in mind it will reset *#05# talk/uptime time counter, and will reset
Your own settings in unit converter .. ok maybe some more. but i did not found anything i cannot easyly fix after or need to suffer later !!

but for sure it DOES NOT replace any GPRS, and WAP settings in phone !!
PS! if shutter sound is deleted/edited in fw12 already ( as this is different method in fw08 -> and fw12 - it will not require to re-do it after fw16 service ...!
also OD tools work great with fw16 ..

I have never been a T9 fan so i never use that , i do not know what it will be after service update Sorry :(


also the service may take ~ 15 - 25 min. so please confirm You have enough battery and dont touch anything untill it completes !

uhmmm... does the fw16 service file do anything better besides removing all timers and settings in unit converter? and will i lose t9 then? i AM a big fan of it, hehehe.

anything better .. not so sure - one notable improvement - 3D java games - , also maybe it starts to respond a lil faster .. anyway i am not as much a technican or tested any benchmarks.. or gathered version change history into files to compare later, but generally it did not make any harm to my set .. and, anyway, if consider the main functions of the phone .. calling / talking , sms'ing - there is really no sense what FW You use .. it works even on fw02 ..
its just personal exitement ... to update and mess with it ..

it maintained T9 English, and IMO replaced/deleted these what was different according to the "variant" - i guess..
but this T9 files can be downloaded for further use, but at present moment i have no options or links ..

Yeah it was good price .. just compare it 3 months later .. still good enough! compared now to my local best prices, even with prices for Branded sets..! but, if counting all indirect costs together, - for cruise and and vodka + girls .. hahahahah.. - its not cheap at all LOL :)

i got quite a scare!

while trying to go for it, my phone went dead for a while... no amount of clicking on the off/on button could bring up the startup animation. it was just white until the light faded. that was for about ten minutes.

but now, it's back... thankfully.

i don't think i'll try this one again :?

ai ai ai , - You just interupted the update / service process.. :(

the sevice software just shut it off for process and on again after it is done .. as i said above .. dont touch it before it is shown - DONE ore finished in COMP SCREEN !!! the same is happening with updates .. imo

it may take ~ 15 - 25 minutes !

it shutdown the Phone to avoid any incomming calls or sms's during service / update.., the update time may depend on computer speeds.., but generally it will NOT take more than 30 min .. * on my Xpsp1 3Ghz - it was ~22 min,
OMG, hope you was lucky, you got it back after interrupted service ..
this is dangerous - deathtrap - you may loose ur set there ..

is it really like that? i've updated before from fw8 to fw12, but this time, there's no message that comes up to warn me not to interrupt the process and that it's doing something.

i guess i'm lucky this time. :)
